MORE Americans could get $250 every two weeks because one area of the country has added a guaranteed income program to more people.

A total of 400 people in Newark, New Jersey, will now get two years of money from the government. A new move by Newark marks the second part of the city’s guaranteed income pilot program.

The first phase of the project started this year, with a group of 30 residents. It has been a goal of city officials to grow the program since May.

This new program in Newark will be tested in two ways: half of the people who sign up will get $250 every two weeks, and the other half will get two payments of $3,000 each year, according to a statement from the city.

People who qualify will get $12,000, or $6,000 each year.

It comes as cities and states are trying out universal basic income (UBI), which is a set of recurring checks from the government that people get.

Residents who live in the city were asked in July to apply through an online portal, which was done with help from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research. The city only allowed 1,200 people to apply.

The residents were chosen because they met the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty line
  • Must be adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic

It costs $26,200 for a four-person family to live in the federal poverty line, which is what most people make in the United States. This is how much most people make.

It closed about two hours after it opened because there were more than 1,200 applications on it.

It’s part of a two-year research project called “The Newark Movement for Economic Equity.”

During Kevin Callaghan’s visit to Newark, I learned that the Newark Movement for Economic Equity had already raised $6.2 million from a mix of private and public funds from the American Rescue Plan. I was very excited about this news.

When philanthropy is flexible and responsive to the needs of the community and the people who work with them, it can make a big difference.

During the next two years, the city plans to look at the data and use it to make policy changes at the state and federal level.
