Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that he is “as convinced as you can be” that Omicron cases would peak in the next few weeks in the majority of states in the United States.

According to Fauci, who spoke on ABC’s This Week, “you never want to be overconfident when you’re dealing with this virus. The trends we’ve seen in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Israel have peaked and are beginning to fall fairly abruptly.

Omicron infections are on the rise throughout the country, but he projected that if patterns follow those in other regions like the northeast, “you will start to see a turn around over the whole country,” which he said included the south and west.

“What we would expect, as we go into the following weeks to months or so, we’ll see across the nation, the level of infection get down below what I call that area of control,” Fauci said when asked about a long-term plan for dealing with COVID and its variations. And there’s a lot of room for maneuverability. You can’t eliminate it, you can’t remove it, but you can reduce its prevalence such that it’s incorporated into the general respiratory illnesses that we’ve learned to live with.”

In other words, “we’d prefer not to have them here,” he said. But they don’t have an impact on society. They don’t instill widespread anxiety about potentially disastrous effects. Even in the pre-COVID period, respiratory infections had the potential to have serious consequences. That’s been the case for as long as I can remember. If it can get there, we’d want to go back to a level of normalcy where it doesn’t interrupt us in the sense of disrupting our lives. I think that’s the best case scenario.

We must also be ready for the worst-case situation, Fauci stressed.

It’s not something I’m predicting, but we need to be ready for it if it does happen.” [in the event that we get] yet another variety with features that might be troublesome, such a high degree of transmissibility or virulence.”

And yet Fauci is upbeat. He points to rising vaccination and booster rates, a rise in the supply of effective treatments, as well as the availability of half a billion new tests, with an additional half a billion planned in the near future.

We could maintain it at that level if we had those things in place—vaccines, diagnostics, masks, and therapy—in place,” Fauci said. “It would be ideal if that were the case.”

When it comes to defending against hospitalizations and catastrophic outcomes “we do know that even with Omicron, boosting makes a huge, huge impact.” — Fauci. “So things are looking good. To avoid becoming overconfident, they seem to be moving in the correct way for the time being.
