Sidney Poitier, the actor who won an Oscar for best actor, has died. He was 94 years old.

On Friday, the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office told Fox News that the star had died, and they said that it was true.

He made a movie in Arizona in 1963 called “Lilies of the Field.” In the end, it was a big deal: He became the first black actor to win an Oscar for a lead role. His name will be on the new film school at Arizona State University, which opened in January of this year. The Sidney Poitier New American Film School was unveiled at a ceremony that took place over the internet.

The decision to name the school after Poitier isn’t just about his achievements and legacy. It’s also because he “embodies in his very person what we strive to be,” says the president of the university, Michael M. Crow.

Here are the top five films of Sidney’s career:

The Defiant Ones (1958) was the first movie he was nominated for an award. He was nominated for Best Actor with co-star Tony Curtis.

Afterward, he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Lilies in the Field six years later. This is how it has always been.

On the subject of race in 1967: To Sir, with Love, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and In the Heat of the Night, which was made by Norman Jewison.

It was Virgil Tibbs, a black police detective from Philadelphia, who gets into a murder investigation in a small town in Mississippi, and he played the part of him. A sequel called “Mr. Tibbs” came out in 1970 because of the line “They call me Mr. Tibbs.”

In the 1980s, he directed Stir Crazy which featured Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in it.
